Sane Energy Project is a grassroots group, formed in January of 2011 to oppose the Spectra Pipeline, the first of several high-pressure, large-diameter shale gas pipelines slated to enter New York City. We have since expanded our mission to include shale gas infrastructure across the state and region. We stand in solidarity with activists fighting all forms of extreme extraction. We work to support and amplify their struggles.

Since its founding, Sane Energy has allied with grassroots activist groups throughout the east coast and across the country.

We were a driving force behind the formation of several coalition efforts in New York like NYGRASS and NYC Grassroots Alliance and the Northeast Pipelines Group. We hosted the first statewide roundtable on offshore wind. We are also a member of the Energy Democracy Alliance, the WinWindNY coalition, and have worked with Beyond Extreme Energy to organize national rallies in Washington DC to oppose FERC.

We conducted a community survey on the effects of radon in NYC and brought the dangers of radon in shale gas to light. We helped organize the 2014 People’s Climate March, raising awareness of the big picture of fracking with eye-catching street art. In 2014 we launched the YOU ARE HERE map, created in coalition with allies around the state to highlight the network of shale gas pipelines and other infrastructure in New York State and Pennsylvania. A comprehensive view that the industry doesn’t want the public to see.

We have always worked to educate the public and elected officials about the alternatives to fossil fuels. We host multiple forums each year, testify at hearings; speak at community centers and churches, and meet with building owners to explain the benefits of renewable fuels and efficiency options. Our team has researched and published countless articles, leaflets, postcards, and blog posts.

With your support, we will continue these efforts.
