Activists Lead NYC Climate Week Walking Tours to Expose National Grid’s Largest Fracked Gas Depot in Brooklyn and Call For Its Retirement

New York State law mandates a complete transition off fossil fuels by 2050 to address the growing climate crisis. Despite this, a staggering $5 billion is being funneled into National Grid's aging gas infrastructure—funds that could be better used for sustainable energy solutions like thermal energy networks.

“Seeing is believing. These walking tours put the scale and the proximity of this toxic, dangerous infrastructure into focus. The hazards of burning fossil fuel are invisible to most people. The industry uses words like "natural gas" to mask the reality. When you see these dirty, looming structures behind a chain link fence, surrounded by a trash-strewn landscape a short walk from where we all live, you begin to understand the urgency of replacing these relics with clean, renewable energy.”  Margot Spindelman, No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance Activist

Who: No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance and Sane Energy Project

Why: The more we know, the more we build community power; we can build a city that serves the people, not shareholder-owned corporations. We Won't Pay To Be Poisoned

Did you know NYC's largest fossil fuel depot sits near homes, businesses, and playgrounds in North Brooklyn? Even more concerning, we all pay for it through our monthly utility bills. National Grid, a UK-based monopoly, secured a significant rate hike to fund its outdated and harmful gas system—putting our health at risk and violating New York's climate laws.

As part of Climate Week NYC, join the No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance and Sane Energy Project for an info session and walking tour of the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) facility. Learn how to transform this 120-acre site to serve the community, not corporate shareholders.

National Grid returned in April 2023 with a new proposal to expand gas infrastructure by a whopping $5 billion, which increased bills for sustained pollution. Now approved by the state utility regulators, the Public Service Commission (PSC), National Grid’s proposed bill increases will raise everyone’s bills in 2024 by an average of $30 monthly. Bills will increase exponentially in 2025 and 2026, totaling $67.00 per month for an average customer’s bill for fracked gas infrastructure.

With New York State law requiring a full transition off fossil fuels by 2050, we should invest in clean energy, not pump $5 billion into National Grid's decrepit gas system. Climate disasters are happening now—extreme heat, floods, and wildfires. We need an energy system that protects us, not harms us!

It’s time for the Public Service Commission and the governor to enforce state climate laws and build a healthier, sustainable future for all.

Sane Energy Project was founded in 2011 to replace fracked gas infrastructure with 100% democratically controlled, renewable energy in New York State. We build every campaign through a lens of racial, social, and ecological justice. With an active base of over 15,000 supporters, we have led successful campaigns that have stopped or delayed ten major fossil fuel projects in New York.

The No North Brooklyn Pipeline Alliance is a grassroots organization dedicated to opposing fossil fuel expansion in North Brooklyn and advocating for a transition to renewable energy sources.
